Along with Morgan Sandercock\, Jim flew the Airbus Perlan II aircraft to a new claimed glider altitude record of more than 52\,000 feet over southern Argentina in September 2017.\n\nThe Perlan Project was founded by Einar Enevoldson in 1992 to explore using mountain waves and the Polar Night Jet to fly a sailplane into the stratosphere. In 2006\, Einar and Steve Fossett proved this concept by flying the Perlan 1 glider to an altitude record of 50\,727 feet in the Andes. Einar gave a memorable presentation in Ridgecrest in 2011 about this record flight.
