The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert has planned its last field trip for the season with a return visit to Cero Gordo on Saturday, June 13. Trekkers will have the opportunity to see the many changes that have taken place on “Fat Hill.” The Hoist House, among the many restored or rebuilt structures, is anticipated to be open for tours, and the Crapo House is now open as a gift and antique shop and visitors’ center. Cecile and Roger Vargo are expected to be present at the Gift Shop to sell and autograph Cecile's books. Since the trip will take visitors to an altitude of 8,500 feet, layered clothing is advised, along with sturdy shoes, a hat, a camera, and most importantly, drinking water, since there is none available on the mountain. Trekkers will meet at the eastside parking lot of the Historic USO Building, 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd. at 7:45 a.m. for an 8 a.m. departure. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary, but the road is steep and rocky, so a little clearance and good tires are necessary. There is no limit on how many may go on the trip. Contact Jim Kenny at 760-371-2458 for more information.
