FAMED WYATT EARP TO BE SUBJECT OF MARCH HSUMD GENERAL MEETING
This month’s general meeting of The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 7pm, at the Historic USO Building, 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd., and will feature local archaeologist Russ Kaldenberg speaking about famed lawman and gambler Wyatt Earp’s experiences in the Searles Valley. Wyatt Earp, may have been the most famous person to ever pass through the Searles Valley. In 1910, while residing and gambling at “Poeville,” located close to the famous “Tanks” near the present day Trona Airport, Earp was arrested for claim jumping on the Trona Company’s holdings near the Trona Reef during the pre-World War I “Potash Wars.” Kaldenberg, noted author and Searles Valley historian, will present a fascinating history of the noted western legend's time in our Valley. The society meets on the third Tuesday of the month. The meetings are free and welcome to all. For more information, call 760-375-8456.
