Evening Presentation - "Gliding to the Stratosphere" with Jim Payne
Meet record-setting glider pilot Jim Payne! Along with Morgan Sandercock, Jim flew the Airbus Perlan II aircraft to a new claimed glider altitude record of more than 52,000 feet over southern Argentina in September 2017.
The Perlan Project was founded by Einar Enevoldson in 1992 to explore using mountain waves and the Polar Night Jet to fly a sailplane into the stratosphere. In 2006, Einar and Steve Fossett proved this concept by flying the Perlan 1 glider to an altitude record of 50,727 feet in the Andes. Einar gave a memorable presentation in Ridgecrest in 2011 about this record flight. Join us to hear Jim Payne tell us about the Airbus Perlan II project, the Perlan II aircraft and the historic flight from El Calafate in the Patagonian Andes.
